Laboratory Assistant
Description
The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.
We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant to join our Media and Glass Preparation (MGP) Laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant will contribute to the laboratory activities, providing support to all laboratories at VIDO. This position will report to Dr. Ravendra Garg, Research Scientist.
Duties
- Prepare buffers, media, and sterile solutions following standardized protocols.
- Collects dirty glassware from laboratories
- Washes, dries and sterilizes glassware
- Receives shipments and distributes to laboratories
- Sterilizes and disposes of liquid biohazardous waste
- Washes and folds laundry for laboratories
- Document recipes, protocols, and quality checks.
- Maintain inventory of chemicals, reagents, and consumables.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma or equivalent education and experience.
- 1-2 years of hands-on laboratory experience.
- Experience in buffer and media preparation.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Safety Considerations
- Must be willing and capable of safely lifting static weights up to 25 lbs.
- The position requires prolonged standing, walking, crouching and reaching.
- Work environment may require use of specific PPE
Status: 2-year term position, with the possibility of becoming permanent
Employment Group: Non-Union
Shift: Monday – Friday (standard hours of work are 8:00am- 4:30pm, 7.5 hours per day (37.5 hours per week), with ability to work occasional flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
