The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, you will set up, monitor, and maintain IT infrastructure and attached equipment. Perform a variety of maintenance, evaluation, installation, and training tasks to ensure systems performance meets VIDO and user requirements in a Windows/Linux environment. Support end users in all facets of a complex computational environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
·        Evaluate and/or recommend purchases of workstations and servers along with related peripherals and software, access control hardware, and video surveillance gear.
·        Investigate user problems, identify their source, determine possible solutions, test and implement solutions.
·        Install, configure, and maintain desktop computers, servers, network switches and cabling, and other related equipment and systems.
·        Plan and implement system security measures, including building firewalls, managing host security, file permissions, backup and disaster recovery plans, file system integrity and user account maintenance.
·        Troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational difficulties.
·        Develop and conduct various training and instruction for system users on operating systems, software, and hardware; assist users in maximizing use of networks and computing systems.
·        Establish and perform maintenance programs following VIDO standards.
·        Investigate, recommend, and install enhancements and operating procedures that optimize network availability.
·        Maintain confidentiality regarding the information being processed, stored or accessed by the network.
·        Other duties as assigned

Education Required:
·        Computer networking diploma or bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering.

Experience Required:
·        Minimum 3 years’ experience

  • Familiarity and experience with installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of access control, video surveillance, and/or building management systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems. 
  • Familiarity with relational databases.
  • Experience with hardening of IP networks, servers, workstations, and applications.

Other Requirements:
·        Working conditions vary: Mostly in a normal office environment but will frequently require working in mechanical and industrial support spaces and potentially having to enter restricted bio-containment areas.  Interactions involve dealing with complex situations and adapting known methods to address needs. Most duties can only be performed on premises, with minimal opportunity for remote work.

Employment Group: Non-Union
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours per day (37.5 hours per week); evening and weekend work may be required to attend to emergent situations
