The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility supporting a variety of large and small animal models. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.
 
We are seeking an outstanding scientist to join our team of principal investigators and lead an independent, externally funded, and competitive research program in the field of immunology. 
 
Position Summary:
The successful candidate will develop and lead a globally competitive research program focusing on the understanding of immunological mechanisms contributing to protection from viral or bacterial infections in livestock species or humans. Specific research areas of interest include the study of immune defenses at mucosal surfaces relevant to protection against respiratory, enteric or reproductive pathogens. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with VIDO colleagues actively investigating a variety of viral and bacterial pathogens, developing novel vaccines and delivery systems, adjuvants or other novel immune-protective strategies. The successful candidate will be expected to recruit and supervise postgraduate trainees and technicians, as well as contribute to knowledge transfer, community, and stakeholder engagement. Appointed candidates will receive generous start-up support and a starting salary highly competitive with comparable academic positions in Canada. Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have a PhD and/or DVM/MD with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience and a proven record of research contribution in immunology.
  • Relevant research experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of immunological mechanisms and relevant peer-reviewed publications is essential.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining external research funding and in supervision of trainees is highly desirable.
  • Effective organizational, time management skills, and prioritization skills as well as effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Applicants must have ability to work effectively as a team member.
 
Appointments will be made as full-time permanent Principal Research Scientist joining VIDO’s team of internationally recognized Principal Research Scientists working in fields of Virology, Bacteriology, Immunology and Vaccine Development. VIDO has core resources in flow cytometry, imaging, next generation sequencing, bioinformatics and high-performance computing, protein expression and purification. A team of veterinarians and animal care technicians provide for humane care and ethical conduct of infectious disease research in biocontainment using a variety of large and small animal models. Research is further enabled through collaboration with colleagues on the University of Saskatchewan campus including the College of Medicine, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Engineering as well as facilities and research centers such as the Centre for Quantum Topology and Its Applications, Protein Characterization and Crystallization Facility, Canadian Light Source  and Saskatchewan Structural Sciences Centre.
