The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.
The Mycobacterial Pathogenesis & Tuberculosis (TB) Research Group led by Dr. Jeffrey Chen seeks to better understand how TB bacteria are able to infect, persist and cause disease in a host and use the insights generated to develop new vaccines and therapies to combat TB. We are recruiting a Research Associate for our group which has research interests in both human and zoonotic bovine TB. Reporting to Dr. Jeffrey Chen, the successful candidate will help manage projects, design, perform and/or assist with experimental activities, analyze data, assist with writing research manuscripts, and grant proposals. Given the nature of the work, this position may on occasion require coming into the lab on weekends.
Qualifications
· A PhD and/or DVM in microbiology, infectious disease immunology or cellular microbiology with first-author publications in reputable scientific journals is a requisite.
· Experience working with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and mammalian cell/tissue cultures or organoids to study host-pathogen interactions by fluorescence microscopy is preferred.
· Experience working in containment level-3 (CL3) would also be an asset but not necessary. However, the candidate will be required to undertake CL3 training and be willing to work in this environment at VIDO.
Status: 2-year term, with the possibility of extension or permanency
Employment Group: Non-Union
Shift: Monday – Friday, 7.5 hours per day (37.5 hours per week)
