The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.
 
The Emerging Virus and Next Generation Vaccine Research Group led by Dr. Alyson Kelvin seeks to better understand the biology of emerging viruses for the development of countermeasures to prevent future outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. We are recruiting a Research Associate for our group which has research interests in emerging viruses and the development of countermeasures through a One Health Lens. Specific projects focus on immune memory to influenza viruses and coronaviruses; Avian Influenza; and Mpox viruses. Reporting to Dr. Alyson Kelvin, the successful candidate will help manage projects, design, perform and/or assist with experimental activities, analyze data, assist with writing research manuscripts, and research grant proposals. Given the nature of the work, this position may on occasion require coming into the lab on weekends.
Qualifications
·      A PhD in microbiology, infectious disease immunology, or cellular microbiology with first-author publications in reputable scientific journals is a requisite.
·      Experience working with viruses and/or virus infected samples.
·      Experience or interest in immune responses to viruses.
·      Experience working in containment level-3 (CL3) would also be an asset but not necessary. However, the candidate will be required to undertake CL3 training and be willing to work in this environment at VIDO.
 
Status: 2-year term, with the possibility of extension or permanency
Employment Group: Non-Union
Shift: Monday - Friday or modified work schedule depending on sample collection and processing needs
