The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals.
 
Position Summary
Working independently with support and direction from the animal technicians and animal technician lead, the animal attendant ensures basic daily requirements of all animals are maintained. The animal attendant also performs a variety of assigned duties, both inside and outside of the animal care facilities. The animal attendant is required to work with all types of species, which are subject to change based on research requirements.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with the following competencies and experience:
·        Performs a range of husbandry duties including, but not limited to, feeding animals and cleaning pens/cages at VIDO facilities, including the research farm.
·        Completes general maintenance duties which may include filling p-traps, cleaning of washrooms in containment, lawn care and maintenance in compound, cleaning, loading and unloading of autoclave, equipment maintenance, preparing supplies, and maintaining relevant paperwork.
·        Ensures humane treatment of all animals in their care, while observing animal behavior, reporting concerns to veterinarian staff.
·        Prepares, cleans and disinfects room and supplies following completion of procedures.
·        Performs work independently utilizing instruction lists.
·        Assists in restraining and challenging animals as required.
·        Participates in providing animal enrichment and on the enrichment committee.
·        Ensures confidentiality is maintained.
·        Participates in assigned weekend rotation, performing a variety of tasks.
·        Other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
Minimum requirement completion of grade 12. Experience working with animals and understanding requirements of care is required. Relevant post-secondary education is an asset.
 
Status: Permanent
Employment Group: Non-Union
Shift: 7.5 hours per day (37.5 hours per week). Shift work will be required and will be assigned Sunday – Saturday.
